In modern Western society, magnesium deficiency is an increasingly big problem, and one of the main reasons many (most?) of us are so deficient is simple: a diet that contains practically no magnesium — a highly-processed, refined diet, based largely on white flour, meat, and dairy (all of which contain no magnesium).
Modern life helps us lose what little magnesium we do get in our diet: Magnesium levels are decreased by excess alcohol, salt, coffee, phosphoric acid in colas, profuse sweating, prolonged or intense stress, diuretics (water pills), antibiotics and other drugs, as well as some intestinal parasites.
If you suffer from one of the following conditions, it’s quite likely one of the underlying symptoms is a magnesium deficiency, something the Buteyko method helps to address, for example through regular Epsom salt bathing where the physiological benefits and the improvements in the breathing pattern can be felt almost immediately:
- Chronic fatigue
- Muscle cramps or twitches
- Sensitivity to loud noises
